New York Mets designate retired slugger David Wright's number as a "one-club man" as permanent number.

The Mets announced on the 7th (Korea Standard Time) that they will hold a permanent cancellation of Wright's uniform number "5" and an event to join the club's Hall of Fame on July 20.스포츠토토

This brings the Mets' total number of permanent absentees to 10, following Casey Stengel (No. 37) in 1965, Gil Hodges (No. 14) in 1973, Tom Seaver (No. 41) in 1988, Mike Piazza (No. 31) in 2016, Jerry Cuthman (No. 36) in 2021, Keith Hernandez (No. 17) and Willie Mays (No. 24) in 2022, and Dwight Gooden (No. 16) and Darryl Strawberry (No. 18) in 2024.

Including Jackie Robinson (No. 42) who was designated as a permanent absentee by all 30 Major League teams, it is the 11th player.

Wright, who is considered the best position player in the history of the Mets, made his big league debut in 2004 and played only for the Mets until he retired in 2018.

He has a career batting average of 0.296, 242 homers and 970 RBIs in 15 seasons, has been selected as an All-Star seven times, and Gold Glove has received two.

Wright had high expectations for his Hall of Fame performance in his 20s, but in his 30s, he took off his uniform after being on the injured list for a long time, suffering from back, shoulder and neck injuries.
